how to change [sources.list] on Kali Linux

Posted by

Normally when you have a fresh install of Kali Linux you will find some common issues with the “sources.list” file.

The [sources.list] file contains the list of available repositories to download and install packages, “Ubuntu OS” is configured automatically, but Kali Linux need some steps to get those extra packages that are not pre-charged as Ubuntu OS.

You will get some error messages when you try to install the packages, but most common error message is:

“unable to locate package”

To fix this issue, please check the following steps:

1. do a backup of sources.list

# cd /etc/apt
# cp sources.list sources.list.bk

2. edit the original file

# vi sources.list
# nano sources.list

3. add the following repos, URL’s

Regular-repo

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

Source-repo

deb-src http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

Kali-repo

deb http://http.kali.org/kali kali-rolling main non-free contrib

4. save file
5. update the sources.list

# apt-get update
